How to Become a certified OEMHA Trainer

Trainer Certification

So You Want to be a Hockey Trainer...

It's now easier than ever to become a qualified hockey trainer - and we've got all the information you need to get started. Every team has to have a certified trainer on the roster - so we need your help. You cannot be added to a roster until these are complete.  There are 3 steps to complete:

Step 1:

Determine the trainer clinic that you need to attend by reviewing the Hockey Trainers Certification Program Overview (for most people HTCP Clinic 1 will suffice).

Step 2:

Sign-up and complete the required clinics.

Trainer certification - HTCP Clinic 1 can be completed on-line or in person at an OMHA sponsored clinic. Information on the online course and how to find the list of OMHA sponsored clincs can be found on our OEMHA WebSite.

Respect in Sport (formerly known as - Speak-Out) - This can be completed online. More information can be found on the our OEMHA WebSite.

Courses Available On-Line

On-Line Respect in Sport (Speak-Out) Course

All Team Officials [Coaches, Trainers, Managers] in the OMHA must have a minimum of Speak Out! [PRS] or Respect in Sport [RIS] certification in addition to all other certification appropriate to their position. All participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age to attend. All Association Executives and Parents are also strongly encouraged to attend the program.

The former Speak-Out program  is now only offered online and is now called Respect in Sport. This will allow participants to complete the certification at a time and place that is convenient to them. The program is also allows participants to complete the certification in segments, over a maximum 30-day time period, thus providing additional flexibility.

Hockey Trainers Certification Program [HTCP]

The HTCP is a risk management and safety education program for the volunteer hockey trainer. The ultimate goal of the program is to have all Hockey Trainers implement effective risk management on their own teams, where safety is the first priority at all times, both on and off the ice.

This program can now be completed online when your schedule allows. Follow this link https://htohockey.ca/ for information on both the HTCP Level 1 course and the HTCP Level 1 Refresher.

Step 3:

Complete your PRC (Police Record Check) online at the Ottawa Police Website and send the results to your convenor. Minor hockey requires Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Check. Please see for the letter that you must complete before submitting your Police Record Check.

Its that easy - however if you have any questions please feel free to send an email to Stu Brodie at risk_and_safety@oemha.ca.
