Hockey Gear 101

Hockey Equipment Checklist

If your son or daughter is just starting hockey, or you are fishing through your storage room to get ready, here is a check-list of gear that your child must have in order to participate.
  • Hockey helmet with a full cage
  • Neck Guard
  • Mouthguard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Gloves
  • Jock/Jill strap
  • Pants
  • Shin guards
  • Skates
  • Hockey stick
  • Jersey (Supplied by OEMHA for the season only)
  • Socks (Supplied by OEMHA. You keep 'em.)
Optional but recommended
  • A bag to carry it all to the arena. (Real hockey bags should smell awful)
  • Tape for your hockey stick.
  • Clear "sock" tape
  • Water bottle

A good guide to fitting the gear can be found here.

Message to IP Parents

While this can seem overwhelming the first time you try to dress a squirming 4-year old, you will make it through this. There will be lots of Mums and Dads that will be willing to help, so just ask if you need assistance in the dressing room the first day or two. As well, you might want to partially dress your little one at home, where it is quiet and the TV can help distract them. The upside is that the extra bulk from their gear wedges them into the car seat, so they can complain on the way to the rink but not escape :-)
