Novice News: Conditioning and Evaluations

2014-08-30

Hi Everyone:

Welcome again to the 2014-15 hockey season.  I am the Novice convenor which means I organize the early season evaluations and team sort outs.  During the season, I oversee the division for OE and distribute practice times.

For now, you should know first conditioning sessions are starting on September 3 or 5 see the list below to know your time. Following these sessions, there will be additional sessions to assess player skills, game play and team balancing. If you can't attend any of your assigned sessions, let me know and we will try to accomodate you in another session. The regular season starts just after Thanksgiving.

Here is the important information you need to know about next week's conditioning and evaluations.

Before I get to that information I need volunteers to help out.  We need on ice volunteers to help run drills and time players.  I also need someone to be in charge of distributing the pinnies or bibs before the evaluation sessions.  If you can help, let me know your availability ASAP.

A few things you need to know about the process:

  • if you can't make your session, let me know and we can move you to another session but I need to know beforehand
  • you need to provide your own jersey (you don't get a team jersey until you are placed on a team)
  • make sure your child has full equipment before they get on the ice
  • each player will be assigned a pinney with number when evaluations start (not needed for conditioning)
  • if your child is interested in playing goalie, let me know and we'll get them time at a goalie session - since there is not enough equipment for everyone, preference will be given to those players who have their own equipment and/or have already played goalie regularly in Novice and IP
  • the purpose of the evaluation process is to provide a fair and impartial assessment of a player’s total hockey skills during the skills and scrimmage sessions, to ensure that players have a fair opportunity of being selected to a team appropriate to their skill level, and to form teams that are balanced and competitive where players can develop and participate equitably and have fun playing hockey during the season
  • if there is a good reason why your child needs to play with another child (i.e., car pooling), let me know and we'll try to put them together
  • evaluations are carried out by OEMHA volunteers that have experience evaluating/coaching Novice players but do not have their own children in Novice
  • please check at the table in the front when you arrive to confirm your registration and dressing room assignment (no pinnies/bibs needed during conditioning).
  • remember, this is not life or death its just hockey

In terms of general questions about what to expect during the season:

The Novice teams are usually scheduled with one practice and one game each week starting just after Thanksgiving and running through to February playoffs and maybe a tournament in March (a team might have 2-3 other tournaments during the year).  The games are nearly always on the weekends (90%) and the practices are usually Tuesdays to Friday (6 pm) or weekends (even split, last year).  The weekend games are always before 6 pm and usually not before 8 am (some practices can be at 7AM).  The farthest rink is Kilrea (Canterbury) but half the games are played at St.Laurent or Sandy Hill (15 games plus playoffs).  The kids are divided by level A (most advanced), B and C.  If you play Novice A, there might be a more demanding practice/game schedule.
