Initiation Hockey 101

Some Helpful Facts

Initiation Hockey, IP for short, is where most new players in OEMHA start. You will often hear it referred to as Timbits hockey, thanks to the generous support of our local Tim Hortons franchisees who provide sweaters, cool "swag" for the kids and a fun day at the Canadian Tire Centre. If you are new to hockey, it can feel like learning a whole new language, so this web page will try to help you get up to speed quickly.

How Old Does my Child Need to Be

Each year we welcome kids as young as 4 and as old as 6. Please consult the registration for for details about which birth years are eligible for Initiation. Technically, we do not have an upper limit on age, but we don't usually recommend older kids skate with the little guys. There are programs to introduce older kids to hockey, and other age groups within the Association can integrate new skaters if you register at the start of the season.

My Child Doesn't Skate

That's fine! We have certified coaches and lots of parent volunteers to help kids of all skill levels. The guiding principle of Initiation hockey is learning through play, so we are well equipped to welcome everyone.

That Sounds Like Fun. Can I Volunteer

Yes! We are always looking for coaches, on-ice volunteers, trainers with first-aid experience and help at tournaments and events.

What About Teams

We have two main groups in Initiation; IP 5 for the younger kids, or kids who are just getting started, and IP 6 for the older or more advanced kids. Despite the names, we do not usually sort out the teams solely on the basis of age. We try to place kids in the group where they will have the most fun and be able to keep up.

Will There be Francophone Coaches

We have always had French and English speaking coaches on the ice.

What the …. is a Convenor

Each division has a convenor who organizes the teams, makes sure there are coaches and volunteers and generally keeps parents informed of upcoming events. If you have any questions or concerns, you should address them to the convenor.

Who Else Might I Receive Email From

Each team will have one or more managers who do the real work of registering for tournaments and organizing special events. From time to time, they send out emails letting you know about upcoming events.

When Will we be on the Ice

This changes from year to year, depending on things like the availability of ice, the availability of coaches, where your child is placed and how many kids are registered. Please refer to the specific web pages for each team to learn more.
